If you haven't read anything by Keris Stainton before, one of the many things she is good at is balancing gritty realism with perfect escapism. One Italian Summer's rather beautiful cover might lead you to believe that it's a fun, romantic, summer adventure - and it is - but it also focuses heavily on grief. One Italian Summer, from Keris Stainton, is an intriguing YA novel which tenderly deals with grief, and the strength of sisters.. Three sisters, Milly, Elyse and Leonie are off to Italy for the summer with their mother. Normally this would be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with extended family and soak up the wonderful Italian culture. Keris Stainton was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which, by all accounts, is very cold. And also hot. But when she was four months old, her parents moved back to the UK, and now she lives in Lancashire with a fellow northerner, their two ridiculously gorgeous sons and a pug. Okay, they haven't got a pug, but Keris hopes if she writes it here it will come true.
In One Italian Summer we meet Milly and her sisters, Elyse and Leonie. They have a really close relationship, even more after their dad's death a year go. As you can imagine, their grief is palpable during the whole story and the fact that their mother has chosen to hide in her work as her coping mechanism doesn't help the situation.
